When we think about what it means to be blessed among women we often think:

A woman who has children. A woman with a husband. A woman with the big house with the white picket fence. Or the woman with the prestigious speaking ministry. The one with the fancy car and designer bags. The pretty one

But scripture paints an altogether different picture of what it means to be most blessed among women. This term is used twice in the Bible. Let’s look at the first in the book of Judges.

Judges 4:21: “But Ja’el the wife of Heber took a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple, till it went down into the ground, as he was lying fast asleep from weariness. So he died.”

A housewife used a common household item to do something extraordinary—crush the head of the enemy.

It was the woman’s job to setup tents, and she would have known how to drive a tent peg from years of experience. So with this act, the Canaanite oppression was broken, and within a short time Barak was able to carry the battle directly to Jabin and destroy him. The land had rest forty years (Judges 5:31).

Deborah praises Jael for killing the enemy who invaded her tent. “Most blessed of women be Ja’el (Judges 5:24).

Mary’s song of praise by Elizabeth includes the same phrase that Deborah used in her song of praise. “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! (Luke 1:42).

It would be the fruit of Mary’s womb who would crush the head of the enemy—Satan himself.

I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel” (Genesis 3:15).

Paul, in his letter to the church of Rome writes that “the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.” If we can say this of Christians in general, then we can say it of Mary in particular, and to the greatest degree!

It is precisely because of her unique role in salvation history that we can say of her, in a way that we can’t of others, that the God of peace crushed Satan under her feet.

How to be blessed among women

1. Have a wholehearted commitment to see the purposes of God accomplished regardless of personal risk or cost.

2. Don’t hesitate when the opportunity to serve came (even if it doesn’t look like you expected). Submissive to the will of God. And trust him do mighty things through us.
